It's official, Instagram has come out and said they are losing to TikTok

In a statement this week, Head of Instagram Adam Mosseri has come out saying Instagram needs to take a big step back and regroup after Kim Kardashian and Kylie Jenner accused Instagram of “trying to be TikTok” in an Instagram post.

Mr Mosseri stating the platform isn't thinking big enough or bold enough.

The social media giant has decided to roll back plans of controversial changes to the platform after the reality stars came out and said "Make Instagram, Instagram again".

With a combined following of 686 million followers, the famous half sisters posted a photo on Instagram on Monday saying "Make Instagram Instagram Again. Stop trying to be TikTok. I just want to see cute photos of my friends. Sincerely, Everyone.”

Meta (the owner of Facebook) said this week it would be reducing the number of recommended posts and videos from accounts users don’t follow that they see in their feeds, in effort to improve its personalisation of the algorithms.

The changes were seen to appeal to younger users who are leaving Instagram and spending more time on TikTok.

“For the new feed designs, people are frustrated and the usage data isn’t great,” Mr Mosseri has claimed and said Instagram would temporarily reduce the number of recommended posts people see.

“When you discover something in your field that you didn’t follow before, there should be a high bar – it should just be great,” he said. “You should be delighted to see it. And I don’t think that’s happening enough right now.

So I think we need to take a step back, in terms of the percentage of feed that are recommendations, get better at ranking and recommendations, and then – if and when we do – we can start to grow again. I’m confident we will.”
